Arts Behind the Scenes featuring St. John Church’s historic Hook and Hastings Organ

Arts Behind the Scenes featuring St. John Church’s historic Hook and Hastings Organ

presented by Organist and Choirmaster, Peter Stoltzfus Berton
IMG_0125

Saturday, March 18th 3:00 pm
Saint John the Evangelist Church
61 Poplar St, Newport, RI
at the corner of Washington and Willow Streets

The organ was built in 1894 and consists of 1,769 pipes in the organ chamber. The largest pipe is 16 ft. long in speaking length (not counting the “foot”), 18 inches square, and made of maple. The smallest pipe is a half inch long in speaking length, about 1/16 inch in diameter, and made of tin and lead. Modern electronic circuits have replaced some of the mechanical operations but no frequency is enhanced or created by electronic or digital simulation, excepting one temporary replacement (the Pedal Trombone) while original pipes and chest are being restored.

Mr. Berton will discuss the electrification of the organ and well as some of the plans for future restoration. He will perform a brief musical demonstration photo-180of the instrument’s resources, a discussion of the application of modern technology to an old instrument with integrity, and allow for Q&A and attendees to both tour the interior mechanisms and play the instrument.

As with the summer organ recital series he has performed at the church the past three summers, video cameras and a PSBreddoorprojector screen will take the audience right into the action during this event.
