SPLASH November 2014

Jack Frost has arrived, and with him, the arts move in doors to cozy surroundings. Speaking of surroundings, we are delighted that the electorate approved “YES ON 5” which brings much needed financial support to Newport’s new Performing Arts Center. Our next task is to raise matching funds to turn the dream into reality. In the meantime, there’s an array of holiday programs throughout our county to enjoy and take part in. Read on for more information.

ACA Celebrates Arts & Humanities Month
Randy Rosenbaum, Liz Drayton, John HirschboeckThe ACA joined with Discover Newport in celebration of the arts and its critical importance to our local tourism economy at the new Newport Vineyard’s BRIX restaurant. Guest speakers Randy Rosenbaum, Executive Director of the RI State Council on the Arts and Liz Drayton, a member of the Opera House board of Directors, highlighted the importance of the “YES on 5” state bond proposal to over 100 tourism industry guests in attendance who were then entertained by the beautiful sounds of the Newport Strings Project.

All The Colors in Us!
Project MuralThe Berlin came down 25 years ago, but last month the Mural at the wall at Hunter Park in Newport went up! After years of planning and a summer of creative input by the ACA and artists throughout our Community, the finishing touches were applied to the wall. This was truly a collaborative, community effort, led by the Women’s Resource Center of Newport County. Come down to the Park off of Van Zandt in the Point neighborhood of Newport to see the end result.

YES ON 5! – Thank you Newport County
Looking at the results, Rhode Island voters delivered a standing ovation. In fact, the voters in Newport County were second only to Providence in support of the bond, illustrating the value we all place on the arts.
Your collective effort to spread the word about this important bond initiative was invaluable and truly successful. Thanks to you, thousands of Rhode Islanders will have a chance to get back to work, and our local arts organizations will continue to grow and attract new visitors to our communities.
Thanks to you, Rhode Island will establish itself in New England and across the entire East Coast as a leader in the growing arts and cultural economy.
Bravo Newport County!

Rhode Island Arts Calendar: Here’s Where to Go
Arts Now RIThe RI State Council on the Arts, in collaboration with RI Tourism, has as on-line calendar featuring upcoming arts related events. This is where tourists to Rhode Island look to see what’s happening for their upcoming visits. You’ll want to make sure your event is listed, both on this calendar as well as on our local Tourism Bureau website at Discover Newport.

The Rhode Island Arts Learning Network
RI Arts Learning NetworkAre you or your organization involved in or wish to participate in introducing the value of the arts to the youth of Newport County? If so, you’ll want to explore the RI Arts Learning Network.
Mission: We envision a Rhode Island where all children and youth have access to rich and challenging arts learning opportunities in their homes, schools, and communities, thus enabling them to become creative and critical thinkers, effective communicators, responsible citizens, and knowledgeable adults.
Click on the map to view which resources are available to your local school or community group – or add your own. Newport County’s children are our future; let’s work to instill upon them the joy and wonder of the arts.

On behalf of the entire ACA Board of Directors, I want to thank all who supported Ballot Question #5 in this year’s election along with all of those who worked tirelessly to see that it passed. Newport’s new Performing Arts Center is one step closer to fulfilling a dream we’ve all shared. I’ve heard it called “Newport County’s Living Room” – a place where we all will gather to share and partake in the excitement and beauty of the performing arts.

Here’s to an art-full fall and to all the wonderful upcoming arts events this November and December. See you there!
